  • 60 seconds with…Lily Toppo

    Published: January 20 2020

We sat down with Lily Toppo, one of our HR Consultants, to ask her some quick questions to find out a little more about her and why HR is her passion.

How long have you worked at Kent HR?

I have worked as an HR Consultant for Kent HR since December 2018. I’m based in the Maidstone office, but also travel around the county to visit and work with our clients.

    What is your specialism?

    My specialisms include:

    • support in all aspects of employee relations,
    • opperational and strategic HR,
    • delivery of training and workshops,
    • advice on restructures and redundancies,
    • drafting and reviewing of policies and procedures.

The main sectors I specialise in are the education and commercial sectors, although this doesn’t stop me from working across other sectors too.

What’s been the top highlight of your career so far?

It’s hard to go into too much detail, as a lot of the work I do is confidential. A big HR highlight for me was carrying out a complex independent investigation in relating to number of allegations and involving a large number of individuals. It’s so satisfying when a large piece of work is completed and all the hard work you put in is for a reason.

Can you sum up working at Kent HR in three words?

Three words that sum up why I like working at Kent HR have to be:

    1. Varied
    2. Rewarding
    3. Team work

2019 is set to be an interesting year, not least with Brexit day (29 March 2019) fast approaching (or not). Despite the uncertainty that Brexit has created, HR professionals and business owners still have to ensure they are up-to-date with what’s in store in employment law changes that we do know will happen.

Recent news coverage of Uber and Deliveroo has shone a spotlight on the ‘gig economy’ and its use of self-employed contractors rather than full-time staff. How should a new or growing business decide what type of contract to give staff and the employment status associated with each?
